Any thoughts on getting together some in the offseason and chasing some hogs? I know some of you have been posting a bunch about hogs lately and I thought maybe we could come up with some ideas?

There seem to be enough of us from here to get a good group together without too much travel going on.

The only areas I know are the grasslands outside of Decatur, but Randy knows more about this than I do.

I live near randy and there are very few hogs on the grasslands and then it's come and go.also it is bow ,black powder or shot gun only.I can take a person now and then on private land but not more than 1 or 2 at a time and then it is limited to certain areas. Some land owners will not let me bring anyone.

Hog hunting Type II public land. You'll need the Annual Public Hunting Permit....$48.oo

Gus Engling WMA March 13-31 Muzzleloader only.

Richland Chambers WMA March 20 - April 4th Archery Only

April 5th - 25th muzzleloader only.

You can haul as many out as you want to kill. As far as Richland chambers goes, I'll garantee you see em everywhere, just make sure you got a strong 4x4 and some snakeproof boots. Any of you guys are interested let me know, I'll be at booth places each weekend throughout the dates mentioned above. I've seen some very large boar at richland chambers and over 28 hogs in a 4 hour stretch once with no more than 5-6 in a group.

Gus Engling, I've seen less hogs, but still they have alot, but it is a more hospitable area to hunt. You won't need a 4x4 to get around unless the sand burys you. Richland chambers though is black bog river bottom, with copperheads, timber rattlers and a cottonmouth every 10 feet. Sprinkle in the poison ivy and oak, and top it off with skeeters and bull knats. But you'll see some hogs. I've hunted both for 4 years now and have been over alot of the grounds.

Guess, I got your email.

Richland Chambers WMA and Gus are between Corsicana, Tx and Palistine, Tx. I'd say Richland Chambers is about 70 miles from Dallas, and Gus would add another 20 miles to the drive. You guys would be looking at about a 2 hour trip.

By the way, any of you Alvord fellas know anything about the Hagerman WMA?

dave, haggermans is awesome but it is a real pain to get info from the office.I hunted there once ,all I saw was a small hog I'm talking 2 pounder tops! but scouting I saw some awesome bucks and hogs.you have to have international bow hunters ed course and score 80% in a tournamet course.to even enter for a permit which is done buy lotto.

The Hagerman holds WORLD CLASS DEER, I seen the buck Jeff Duncan shot off of there a couple of years back right before Xmas. He has a taxidermist shop in Sanger. It scored 225 I believe. I have seen several pics of bucks taken off there and they have taken there share of 180-200 inch deer off there.
I put in for the drawing last year but had no luck, I will try this year, some of the guys I worked with at Boeing put in and got a tag. Both of them shot the first deer in range, said they seen plenty of deer.
I know you have to have a bowhunters safety course and then you have to go shoot a course and pass the course. The one I shot at over in Denton was a cakewalk, not bragging on shooting ability but the course was laid out where I believe my 9 yr old could have passed it.
I believe a man could kill a once in a life time deer there easily . just need a little luck to go with your know how!

Oh yea, as far as hogs go I only know of one place right now on the LBJ that holds hogs, they kinda come and go but hit it right and there will be plenty to shoot at.
This place is out on Denton Creek, sorry I havent got my map with me or I would tell you the Unit#, Glen you proabably know, isnt the lake on there called Ruckers pond? If I get a chance this evening I will post the Unit #.

Hello I am new to hunting and I'm taking my son hog hunting on monday. I own a 12 gauge shotgun and was wondering what kind a shotgun ammo to use for wild boar? Your suggestions would be very helpful, thank you.

Well Hunter, I guess I am a little late for this, but I would recommend either some buckshot or some slugs!

Good Luck.
