We all know that in bow hunting its not how far you can shoot it, its how close you can get to your game. So on the flip side of the other post, what was the closest shot you have made. I have had deer right under me. The sand from my boots would scare it away if i shuffled my feet. I let it get out about 20 ft before I put it down. Its harder, as we all know, the closer the animal is. I would say spitting distance is gonna be popular with this bunch :D

REV, I've killed quite a few at about 5 yards. I shot a W.Va. buck from 7 yards while on the ground...now that was exciting! Once, I had to pull my bow back so a 4 point didn't nock my arrow off...that is no lie. I have had many deer sniffing the pegs that I climb up. Have you ever noticed the line going along each side of a deer's spine? Getting close to wild game is what hunting is all about to me.

Shot a buck at 5 1/2 feet couple years back. We had a brush fire an the forestery commision came in with dozers and cut fire breaks. The deer took to walking these fire breaks almost immediately. I killed three that season closer to me than the width of the firebreak or 12 '.

Let me tell you whats real exciting, loosing and arrow at a deer and having it decide the best way out is right where your hiding!Or hitting one that goes down thrashing only to have it thrash its way towards you hooves flying. Now thats hunting !

I have never taken 0ne on the ground. I guess thats why I have climber in my name. I would like to do a spot and stalk hunt one of these days. Who am I kidding, I would like to do alot of things hunting wise.

Hat,  thats more of a contact sport or survival however you want to look at it.

Well I've had deer come in, stop at the base of my tree, and start walking away.

My first was an 8 point that I shot while rifle hunting back in 1998. It was early morning and was looking for anlers but could not see any until it was just about to walk away. I was in my stand about 2 minutes before I heard him grunting. I think the rut was in full swing that year.

My second deer was last year while bowhunting. I seen him coming along and got ready for a shot. He stopped and back tracked about 5 yards. :( I thought my hunt was over, but he turned in on the path I use to walk in. Then came to the bottom of my tree and started sniffin the steps I use to climb a tree. He then moved out about five or six yards and released an arrow. 2 inches over his back. I missed the first deer I shot at with a bow. The deer was a small 8 pointer, probably 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 years old.

Don't know what i should blame it on the wind, buck fever, or not enough practice. I think it was a combonation of all 3.

Well as you can tell from my nickname, I ONLY hunt from the ground. This is only my 2nd year of bowhunting and I took a doe from 25 yrds last year and a nice 4 1/2 year old 7 pointer from 20 feet this year. BOTH from the ground.

There was about 10 mintues of shooting light left and the buck had come in close(a combination of being spooked by a farm truck and hopefully my grunts!). I was under a heavy leaved beech with a couple different shooting lanes in his direction. He looked me right in the eye but couldn't make me out, ain't sure how since my eyes must have been big as saucers! He then took two steps, stopped broadside, and I let the crossbow fly. My butt was about to chew hole in my seat cushion!!

Let me tell you if you got your wind right and are still, hunting from the ground is awesome. Had a six point come in behind me last year and he was within 15 feet but I couldn't get turned around. In late October I had a button buck with 10 feet and if he'd been wearing pants when he realized what I was, they'd have been ruined! :D :D

Hunting from the ground is up close and personal. I love it, but boy I'd love to get the view from up above.

I agree wheelzs, ground hunting is about as exciting as it gets. It occurred to me several years ago while turkey hunting in the Catskills that I was being close minded about my hunting style. For whatever reason that spring, I had at least a dozen deer come into my turkey calling. Some of the encounters were nose slapping close.

I love the look on my buddies faces when I come out ready to hunt deer with my Buck Lick Creek turkey vest on.With a built in back support its the perfect ground stand for deer.

Im hoping to avoid this becoming a contact sport Rev those hooves and antlers look mighty scary up close and personal

Many times in a stand I've had to let deer walk away before they were far away enough away to shoot :D. I could have literally jumped on 'em. I guess the closest shot was around 3-4 yards from the ground. I was inside a downed pine-tree (on crutches!). From the air I don't shoot closer than about 7-yds, but have taken several at that range.

My closest shot was about 15 yards, but I called in a 6x4 elk once to less than 10 feet. I shot him at 40 yards when he stopped to check up.
