You are 20ft up in your tree. The wind is in your face blowing about 7mph coming from the north east. A nice buck comes trotting in quartering with the wind from right to left. He is 40 yrds out. He stops right in front broadside but you have no shot due to a limb blocking your way. You have slight cover and a good backstop. You are in thick cover with a stream 30 yrds to your left.He looks jittery and is on alert. There is a doe to your left almost down wind. He is in full rut.

1) What would you do to get him to give you a shot?

2) If you call what would your sequence be?

3) in thick cover, what would be the shot you would be looking for.

Rev,
I am doing what several years of hard earned experience tells me, be patient and see what happens.Seems like everytime I get impatient I end up making a shot that I should have passed, or not getting a shot at all and ending up spooking the deer.

I'd have to play my cards and wait to he cleared the limb and got to within 30 yards. Hope the doe that is almost down wind doesn't bust me.

I wouldn't call, in my experience I've never had a buck respond to any calls while he has a doe in sight that is hot.

On several occasions I've had does that will often times circle my stand site with a buck on her trail that end up giving you a better shot oppurtunity if you just wait it out - but just like playing cards you don't always have the best hand.

Sit tight and let teh deer make the move. If he heads away, I might try a soft grunt. The last thing I want at this monet is his attention on me. I would only call as a last resort. Play it cool, remain calm, and cross your fingers. Evertime I have tried to force a shot or a situation, I went home empty handed.

Thats what i would do. In my beginning days, which wasnt so long ago, I became the victim of over calling. Since no one was there to guide me on this it was like I was duck hunting :D Not that bad, but almost. I had a few bucks at about 35-40 yrds and would blow on that thing. Needless to say what happened. A couple of times I had them circle in but they were very alert and usually spooky. If all those dang deer acted the same they would be much easier to hunt ;)
