Brad scored on a good 2 year old bird this weekend in Arkanasas. We were hunting the Caney Creek Wilderness area and it was a challenge to get away from the other public land hunters and find those tight lipped gobblers.

Brad and I were able to scale the first mountain and spent most of our time well away from the roads. This guy was found at the top of the first ridge on Saturday afternoon, but I will let Brad tell you the whole story. I will say he was the only guy out of 6 hunters who scored for the weekend and then 3 of us stayed through Tuesday with only a few close calls. Turns out all the durn birds are down low where all the other hunters get in your way, or you have to hunt hard like Brad did to bring one down!

I will tell you guys that Brad is one heck of a turkey caller. If I ever heard anyone spit feathers, this guy can do it! I really enjoyed meeting and hunting with him and I expect to share many a camp together. We only had a few days, but we had some great weather and an even better time. After he got his bird we went over several hills with him trying to call one in for me while leaving his gun in camp. This guy is a class act and another great Hunting Forums member! :bigthumb)

Well guys, turkey hunting in the ouachitas has been tough this year. Birds are not wo;rking very good for me or any one else thaat I have talked to. THis bird I killed is not you traditional kill.

I climbed a mountain tha t took me an hour asome change to get up. this thing was tough on an old man. I had to make myself take 50 steps at a time and the steps were only about a foot and a half long as that mountian was that steep!
I knew that at that time of day teh gobblers go high if they ar enot with hens. As I topped out, I looked and saw the prettiest strutting area I have ever seen on the top of a Ouachita hill. I thought that there should be a gobbler there and sure enough, there was one feeding on the edge, just at the edge of my shotgun range. I called to him but he just raised his head and then went back to feeding. Same thing with the second call.

With him showing no interest, I popped him as he was in range. He rolled up and them took off running with his wings out.THis was not what I expected so I was in hot pursuit, after climbing that darn mountain. I was not happy about expending this extra energy. He turned to go off the opposite side that I didn't want him to go He was out of range but I fired again to hopefully turn him and he started running right at me. Now he was too close and I didn't to shoot him up that badly. He finally saw me and went straight away from me. He was slowing sown but I popped him again when he was about 30 yds out. It was n ugly display of hun ting and I am about half embarassed to relate this but these forums are all about the truth so others can learn. I would have rather he gobbled his ass off coming to my call, but to; be honest , after hunting hard all morning and climbing that mountain, I was more than glad to have this bird in my vest.
