View Full Version : Chufa?
I am looking for any information I can find from people who have planted it.
The spots I have are more red dirt and not of the sandy variety, is it easy to plant?
Is broadcasting okay because I do not have a seeder and what type fertilizer did you use!
This stuff is fairly expensive and I just want to do it right!
Thanks for your input and ideas!

Its a large seed, a lot like a nut sedge. I am not sure of the planting dates, some research on the net or reading the packages should tell you than info. You are going to want to plant this stuff about 1" deep or so. You will need some sort of disc or other equipment to break the ground up. This is not like a grass seed. Its about the size of a single peanut in the shell. Soil testing is a good ide to tell you what nutrient to put on it. It is a grass, so I imagine it like Nitrogen, most grasses do. If you are not going to do a soil test, I would go with a broad specturm fertilizer, like 13-13-13.

Shadow is right, it's a grass but it's not the grass that the turkeys and deer it, it's a legume and they paw up the dirt and eat that. That's why sandy soil is preferred so that it can be easily dug up.

The planting "window" for chufa is April thru July. Like Shadow said, the plot will need to be disked up to get the seed in the required 1 to 2 inches. And a soil test will go a long way in ensuring a good, healthy plot. You can work the seed and fertilizer in all at the same time. Chufa will grow red clay dirt, but you will need to use the disc or plow on the field again when the chufa matures. This will bring the tubers up to the surface where the turkey and deer can easily access them.
