Haven't seen any migrant geese coming through yet, but my guess is that the fall migration is a week or so ahead of schedule, based on what I've seen the last week.

We usually get a lot of bluewings on opening weekend of the season (which starts this Saturday) along with woodies. At this point, many of the woodies and bluewings have already headed south, and I'm seeing some greenwings, which usually are a second week bird.

If the migration does speed up, it will be great for those of us here in Minnesota, but if it goes like it did last year, with the homegrown birds moving south but the birds in Manitoba and Ontario staying north until the last minute and then overflying us, it could be a very, very long and fruitless season for ducks.

Lots of local geese, Giants for the most part. My early season was a bust, mainly because I couldn't get out because of job responsibilities, but we usually do pretty well on geese throughout the regular season here.

Gadwall, I'm just a few miles east of you and I have seen some migrant Canadas already. Early goose for us ended up with 32 birds, and we will field hunt this weekend also, let all the people on the sloughs and lakes push them over to us. Hopefully. Last season we hardly hunted until the week of freeze-up, when we absolutely pounded everything that flew. This season we will wait to shoot our deer and then concentrate on the ducks and geese, if it doesn't get too cold too fast. The last two mornings here in DL there was a fairly heavy frost, gotta love it!

Hey, duckbuck. Going to be on a private lake for the first time this Saturday-Monday. We'll be south and east of Hawley a bit. Hopefully, the guys on public land around us will do the same for us that you hope they do for you!

My sons and I are even going to hunt the muzzleloader season this year so we don't miss the best duck hunting. Last year we got buzzed by goldeneyes, mallards, and Canadas while deer hunting high (well, as high as they go) up in the Smoky Hills east of you--talk about kicking sand in one's face!
