Anybody try the hevi-shot for waterfowl yet? I'm going to in the next season if I can get my hands on it up here!

Yes, I have tried it. I hate to brag about this shot I took this season, but it was an unbelievable long shot at a goose with #2 HS. This goose was the back goose in a flock of about 20. I could tell he was a ways away but I wanted to see if this HS lived up to its name. I shot, he rolled out dead. I stepped it off, 69 steps, but that was with his momentum too, so probably not quite 69 steps when he was hit. he was stone dead, never moved. I shot one before him that was no father than 25 yards and he did a flip in the air when I shot him with #2 HS. The stuff is lethal! I was using a 3" mag, but the 2-3/4" is probably just as good as the 3" shell. plus its cheaper. I used HS 4's this year on ducks a couple of times and it hammered them also. We were knocking out ducks 40-50 yards stone dead, With steel at that distance they would glide and be crippled or act like nothing hit them. We always buy a couple boxes and use them for late season shooting when they are wary. We use steel early in the season when our shots are close.

I've got a buddy that really brags hard on it for turkeys and I intend to try it on waterfowl as soon as they pack it in a 10 ga. hull. :D

I am with archer1 on the 10ga. I wish they would hurry up and make it in 10ga. I have a Browning Gold 10 that I use for geese. I would love to use the 4's and 2's on geese and the 6's on ducks. Man, 6's out of a 10ga, they wouldn't be able to fly threw it. I have shot geese with 4's also out of a 3" 12 and it does a good job out to 40 yards. the 2's are great for them wary geese that hang up out there 45-55 yards. I use 2's on geese if I am pass shooting, or if they are wary. I use 4's on geese within 40 yards and long range duck shooting, and I use the 6's when the ducks are coming in good to the decoys. I shot all of mine up this year, I will be sure to buy atleast 2 boxes of each 2's, 4's, and 6's.

2 boxes each? I shoot that many in a single day of ducking! LOL Maybe not 6 boxes, but I have been known to go thru 3 with some left over.

I once took a couple of boxes of bizmuth for the 3 shell in the gun. I figured once they got out there a bit, I could knock em down. I had them sitting right next to the steel shot. We had ducks all around I missed some,(more than I hit), and had 3 in the water. I looked down and to my horror I shot all the bizmuth and left the steel. Talk about sick! I shot $50 bucks worth of shells in 20 minutes.

Climber had to laugh at that last comment you made. A buddy of mine did the same thing. I have looked at using the Hevi-shot, but I just cann't not get the wallet out for the price they are asking. I think the last time I looked it was in the $20-$25 range. I just buy the steel by the case and call it good.

What I would do is put in a #4 steel followed by a #2 steel and keep the Hevi-Shot for the follow up shot. It may not always work out that way but I can't see shooting it exclusively!! Can you buy the shot for the reloading?

Chester,

That was the plan! It just doesnt work out that way in the heat of battle!

I think the hevi-shot will stay in a seperate pocket and only used when the action calms down between flocks. I can see shooting $100 CDN worth a day if it was all I shot. Ducks and geese are tasty but that would be some pretty rich eating!!

Maybe you should pick carefully through the meat and perhaps salvage some of those pellets. :D :D

What I am planning on doing this year is rotating which gun I shoot. I use my 10ga and my 1100 for ducks and geese. I shoot nothing but steel through my 10 and nothing but HS through my 1100. One day I will shoot my 10 and the next day I will shoot my 1100, this way I don't waste my havishot up to quick, plus I like shooting my cannon from time to time. My 12ga 1100 is only
2-3/4", so I pretty much have to shoot HS, because 2-3/4" steel I do not have much faith in as far as knock down power and range out to 40 yards. 2-3/4" in HS is just as good as the 3" HS, you just have a little less shot being throwed.
