What are the best big elk units in Colorado? I will have a hard time leaving unit 66 simply because I have found some pretty good spots to hunt. I have also had pretty good luck there, I am 2 for 3. Should have been 3 for 3, but there was an embarrassing miss at 20 yards

Have you checked out any of the P&Y records for that last couple of years for CO? You might be able to get what units are producing some good bulls...just a thought.

Alan:
Your best units of course are the hardest to draw. Units like 1, 10, 201 and 61 are always good producing units but it may take you up to 10 years of getting preference points in order to draw them.
But I look at things this way -- if you want a good chance at a truly big bull you want to hunt AZ or NM. But these hunts will cost you. That's not saying you can't find them in CO but it's just a bit harder. Colorado manages generally for quantity NOT quality.
I hope in the future to do some columns for Dan on bowhunting elk and the subject of the best units will surely be one of subjects in those columns. I'll also try to tell you what makes it a good unit and what to look for in trying to choose a quality unit. You'd be surprized what makes a unit good. And it's not always the unit that has produced big bulls in the past.
