What do all you fellas think about all the new "Super Magnums". I mean there are the 7mm STW, 7mm Ultra, .300 Ultra, .30-.378 Weatherby, and the list goes on. I shot a .300 Ultra a while back, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It kicked, don't get me wrong. I just expected worse. I must admit, I am attracted to the speed of some of these cartridges. However, they have more range than I can take advantage of, especially in a field condition. My biggest fear is that newbies will think if they have this big rifle, they can instantly shoot 500 yards. This is not the case. If you can't make a 500 yard shot with a standard magnum, I highly doubt you can do it with a "Super Magnum". I feel that connecting on such shots has more to do with the shooter than the bullet and its velocity. I do feel that they can stretch the effective range of a good shooter by eliminating some of the guess work, but not by too much. I don't advocate taking long shots, but I have done it a couple times when the conditions were right. By long I mean anything over 300 yards. I personally wouldn't attempt a shot past 400. The bullets really starts to drop quick out that far, and I am not comfortable with holding much over a deer's back. I feel like they are a tool for the experienced shooter to use. I mean you wouldn't give a 16 year old the keys to a Ferarri would you?
