Hello there, I just got a new 338 that
I plan to use this winter for elk and
I am wondering what if remingtons core lokt
bullet is a good choice. I know they work great for deer, but elk aren't quite the same
when it comes to penitration. Is there a better load that I can buy without reloading?
Thanks in advance.

As with everything, there is always something better. The core locks will work fine. I wouldn't hesistate to use them in an .30-06 on an elk, much less a .338. Elk are big, but not armor plated. I am pretty positive almost any .338 bullet would work fine. Of course, the more controlled expansion bullets are worth looking at. There is the nosler partition, swift A frame, barnes X bullets, Winchester failsafes, and the list goes on for days. Many of these bullets can now be found in premium factory loads. Of course they will more expensive than the core locks as well. If you have core locks, and they shoot well, I would use them, and not worry about how much better a pass through with a differnt bullet would be. After the bullet passes through, it is just wasting energy.

I shoot a .338 as do several of my friends. Try the core-loc out but also try some other ammo if you don't get groups like you want. Shot placement should be your first concern so whatever you shoot go for groups. I personnaly shoot a 210 grain nosler partition in a Federal Premium factory load. It groups great thru my rifle, packs plenty of punch, the light for .338 bullet has a great trajectory and is a little milder in recoil than some of the 225 and 250 grain loads. I've seen my buddy make a great 350+ shot on an elk that resulted in a clean one shot kill with no track and bullet recovered with near 100% retention. Good luck on your hunt.

I dropped a 700lb moose with a single 180gr core-lokt through the shoulder. The moose just fell over dead, didn't even take a step after being hit. As far as I'm concerned, Remington core-lokt are a hard hitting round!

Shot placement though, as has been mentioned, is critical no matter what round you use.
