I am not sure. I know there is the Tule, the Roosevelt, and the Rocky Mountain elk. Then you have exotics that are probably in the same family, Red Stag, Axis?, Fallow?, Sika, and some others. That is all I can contribute. I am still in the learning curve for elk.

Isn't the Tule only located in CA? Is there a huntable herd of them?

I beleive so, and if they have huntable numbers I bet the tags are severely limited. It seems as though I have seen pictures of a hunter or two with them, so maybe there is very limited hunting. I am fairly certain that they are located in Ca.

Biologically speaking, there's only 1 species. What you're refering to are subspecies, like breeds of dogs. "Dog" is the specie, "lab" and "poodle" are subspecies. Subspecies are local variations, but each can breed with any other. A tule can breed with a rocky mtn, a siberian, a red deer, or whatever.
In the US, we have Rocky mtn, Roosevelt, and Tule. There used to be an easter version in KY and surrounding states. They were hunted to extinction many years ago. In Europe, they have Red Deer, and, farther east, the Siberian. I believe there are others, too.

Oregon has two species of Elk, they are Rocky mtn. elk, and Roosevelt elk.The Roosevelt elk are A fine animal Too hunt.living in swamps and douglas fir ridges and alder canyons.Rocky mtn. elk live on the east side of cascades,to the high desert.
There are some sub-species of elk, like the rocky mtn elk in Manitoba is different, it is Manitobensus I think. They produce bigger racks that the rocky mtn elk out west.
They are preferred by the game farms.

Arent the Tule elk the little ones that live in the swamps? IF I am correct, I just read an article about it in a mag. somewhere. They allowed only a few hunters with guides, conservation officers per hunter and a witness or two. Dont quote me, but i am fairly confident.
