O.K. - what do you like and why. Guage / Action. If you're like me its different tools for different jobs.
Ducks and Geese - 10 guage auto loader.
Turkeys - same 10 guage or 3" 12 ga. pump because it's lighter and shorter. (let's hear from you 3 1/2 inch twelve guagers)
Upland game and clays - twelve guage over/under for choke and load options, feels good, carries good, easy to keep track of empties (but I really want a twenty).
Deer (in slug only zones)- 12 ga. 870 pump. It's short, fast, reliable and groups good.
Sound off. :D

I have a Mossburg 835 Ulti Mag that I use for turkeys. It is light, shoots the big 3.5 inchers, but kicks like a mule. I have a Beretta 390 with a 24 inch barrel that I will use in all my other applications. I might use it turkey hunting this year as well. I like short barrels. I grew up shooting a Model 1100 with a 30 inch barrel. I would like to have a 28 gauge just for the heck of it. I don't like over and unders at all. If I were going to get a break action gun, it would be a side by side. I think they have much classier lines, and they seem to point like a dream. Most of my shotguns are pump or auto because of price. The over and under and side by sides are really pricey. I like the Browning A5 as well, but talk about a nasty bruise after a lot of shooting. I got the Berreta 390 because it was a compromise gun. It had light recoil, shot 3" shells, and had the humpback, similar to the A5. That hump sure makes it point easy. It was also very cheaply priced. So far I have all 12 guages except for an Ithica feather weight model 52 20 gauge, and my old H&R .410 from back when I was a little tike. I need to get ride of some of the 12 guages and maybe the 20. They never see any use. The Mossburg and the Beretta will be the only ones seeing use in the field.

Man, you guys have way too many guns ;) Yeah right...I'd have that many if I had the $$$ - anyways I have the trusty ol' 870 Remington that serves me wherever I need a scatter gun.

You did it right the first time and got the 870, no need for another gun LOL. Actually a couple I out grew (.410 and 20), and a couple were passed down to me. I've only actually bought two LOL. I would like to eventually get a really nice side by side one day.

Cut my teeth on a .410 side by side Stevens (talk about a handicap for a kid).
Grew into a Model 37 Ithica in 20 ga. Skipped the 870 at first and bought a used Model 12 Winchester (traded it in on my o/u)
Dan - too many guns is like the too much fun thing, can't happen. Liked that old high back Browning sweet 16 of my Grand Dad's but I was too low on the pecking order to get my hands on it much. I too would like to have a 28 but waitin on the lottery (ammo alone will set you back in life style if you don't reload). Have a good Thanksgiving guys. smile.gif

A very old H&R Topper 12-gauge single-shot with a modified choke. Used it for birds, squirrel, and rabbits. Even a nice eaten hog with a foster slug. Next I'll try it on deer. My pet. :D

I have a few different irons. I have a Winchester Ranger semi-auto, a Baikal side/side, a Remington 11-87, and, most recently, a Benelli Nova. When hunting the East Coast passing eiders, I like the Winchester...it is nice and heavy, but is short and points easily with little recoil. The Baikal is fun for upland stuff because it is so easily manipulated. I used to use my 11-87 for Canadas and ducks, but I have been payingmore attention to the Nova recently...that thing could go to hell and back with no noticable damage, plus, those 3 1/2 anti-aircraft shells make nice work with Canadas.. It aint pretty, but it can do anything...well. Being a taller shooter, I also like the size of the gun. (all of these guns, of course, are in 12 guage).

5 years old thread. . . wow

Anyways, I think that the semi-auto makes good turkey medicine. Cushions the recoil better than any other action type which is important on heavy turkey loads.

I currently use a Winchester Super X2 3.5 inch chambered 12 gauge semi-auto in camo. I've topped it with a Leupold VXII 1-4X scope. This will magnify and gather light, something red-dots won't do.
